Dayton Slips By Cardinals With Late Rally
March 15, 2019 | Baseball
Ball State and Dayton will play a single game Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
DAYTON, Ohio - Ball State found itself on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel Friday afternoon, as BSU dropped a 5-4 ballgame at Dayton's Woerner Field. The game was tied 1-1 until the home team found three runs in the 7th.
A homer by Dayton's Riley Tirotta in the 2nd inning was the game's total scoring until the Cardinals tied it in the 7th. Drey Jameson and Dayton starter Hunter Wolfe were both cruising in a 1-0 game until Aaron Simpson led off the 7th with a single, stole second and then scored on a double play to tie the game. The game-changing frame was the bottom half of the 7th, when Dayton got three runs to go up 4-1. That inning featured a walk and two wild pitches, and Dayton capitalized.
Andre Orselli singled and later scored on a wild pitch for BSU's second run. With Ball State trailing 5-4 in the 9th, Simpson doubled and scored and later Ross Messina scored to make it a one-run game. Ball State put the tying run on 3rd base in the 9th but ran out of outs.
Drey Jameson worked 6.2 innings and finished the day with 11 strikeouts, allowing three runs on three hits. He now has 50 strikeouts on the year over 29.2 innings.
Orselli, Simpson and John Ricotta each had two hits, with Simpson and Ricotta each hitting a double. In addition to Jameson, Mike Pachmayer and Ty Weatherly came on in relief and Ball State pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts while allowing just six hits.Â
