Ball State Wins Kent State Quad Meet
March 10, 2019 | Gymnastics
Consistent effort across board lifts Cards to victory
KENT, Ohio - To win a four-team event, it takes contributions from an entire team. Consistent efforts in all four events led the Ball State gymnastics team to a first-place finish at Kent State's quad meet on Sunday.
"We did a great job of starting the meet strong and staying focused and together as a group," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "For us to have another solid meet at this point in season is great for confidence."
Eleven of BSU's 24 routines scored 9.775 or better and nine different gymnasts at least one mark of 9.775. The battle for first place went down to the wire. Ball State was leading the team scores and finished on vault, allowing them to finish with the highest scores of the day.
"It was a really tight at the end between us and Rutgers," Saleem said. "It was good to see us stay focused internally, keep doing consistent gymnastics and put out solid scores."
Ball State's 195.325 edged Rutgers (195.175) for first place. Host school Kent State (192.550) was third and an injury-ravaged North Carolina team was fourth.

Arden Hudson's 9.825 effort on the bars tied for first in that event and was her career best.
"Loved arden's bar routine. We're excited about that," Saleem said.
Kaitlyn Menzione was in the top 3 in both of her events. She was her consistent 9.900 on floor and 9.825 on beam. Lauren Volpe also scored 9.800 on beam, an event where Ball State has shown dramatic improvement in recent weeks.
"It's really fun to watch them dig in and find their competitive spirit," Saleem said.
After defeating Rutgers, Ball State will see another Big Ten team Sunday, March 17 when it travels to Michigan State for a quad meet. Alaska and UIC will also be competing. The MAC Gymnastics Championships are Saturday, March 23 at Northern Illinois.
