Ball State Keeping The Fun Going Strong
March 09, 2019 | Gymnastics
Cards in quad meet at Kent State Sunday afternoon
While Ball State students left campus for home or vacation for spring break, the Ball State gymnastics team was hard at work preparing for the last few meets of the regular season. But it's not all work.
There's some play. The Cardinals coaching staff took the team up to Fort Wayne, Indiana, for some team bonding spring break fun - laser tag and ax throwing.
While there isn't much ax throwing in any of the girls' competition routines, head coach Joanna Saleem said it was important to have some fun and stay loose at a critical point in the season.
"It's important for the team to have some spring break fun," Saleem said. "We were able to bond but we still have some work to do. We just wanted to throw something into our routine that gives the girls a chance to have fun and become refreshed.
"This is an important time of the season. We are wrapping up and getting ready for the championships. We didn't want everyone feeling bogged down in the gym, we want to be having fun because that's important."
After a fun time as a team doing some outside-the-box team activities, it's now time for the Cards to focus on the task at hand. Sunday's meet at Ball State is a conference road meet with Rutgers of the Big Ten and North Carolina of the ACC also competing. It was a tri-meet before Rutgers was added to the lineup.
Ball State is coming off a very strong performance on March 3. BSU scored a season-best 195.625, a fraction of a point off the school meet record. The performance featured 10 different routines scoring 9.800 or better and also saw a season-best 48.925 showing on balance beam. But it's not so much who else is in the gym, or what happened on March 3. The Cardinals are looking forward with razor-sharp focus.
"We just need to work on what we've done all season. Our landings, our handstands," Saleem said. "That's what we need to be focused on. We don't want to be distracted about a quad meet or what teams are there. We're just staying internally focused on doing the best we can."
