February 08, 2019 | Women's Golf
Cardinals fall to tournament champion in final round at Lake Jovita
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State women's golf team wrapped up its Sunshine Invitational match play event Friday by falling to tournament champion James Madison, 4.5 to 1.5.
Emily Knouff earned a full point for the Cardinals by winning her final hole to claim a 1 up win, and Liz Kim halved her match for the other half point. Knouff was Ball State's leading point scorer for the week with 1.5 points over three rounds on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
James Madison won the tournament by virtue of tiebreakers. The Dukes, Saint Leo and Princeton all finished the event with records of 2-1-0. James Madison and Saint Leo also tied for total individual matches won (11), eliminating Princeton (10). The Dukes edged the Lions on the final tiebreaker, total number of holes remaining among all individual matches won, 24-23.
Friday's action began with the conclusion of the second round, which was suspended by darkness the night before. Saint Leo closed out a 6-0 victory over Ball State to put itself in the driver's seat before falling to Omaha in the third round to fall into a tie with James Madison and Princeton.
The Dukes and Tigers both won their third-round matches to catch Saint Leo and force the event to be decided by tiebreakers.
All matchups for each of the three rounds were predetermined based upon seeding by national rankings. Teams earned one point for winning a team match and half a point for tying it.
Ball State will return to action Feb. 22-24 with its annual trip to the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational at Rio Verde Country Club in Arizona.
