Cardinals teeing it up in Florida for first event of spring schedule
As students across the country make plans to flock to the sunshine and warm weather for Spring Break in a month or so, the Ball State women's golf team is getting an early start. Only for them, it is a business trip. The destination: Dade City, Florida.
The Cardinals kick off the spring season Thursday as the host and defending champion at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational. The six-team match play event moves to a new location this year on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
The field also includes Princeton, James Madison, Florida Atlantic, Omaha and Division II top 25 squad Saint Leo. Matchups for each of the three rounds are predetermined. Teams earn one point for winning the team match and half a point for tying it. The team with the most points after the three rounds is the champion.
The first two rounds will be played Thursday, and the third round will take place Friday. The action begins at 8:30 a.m. both days with a shotgun start on the back nine, and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Each team match is composed of six individual matches. Ball State's lineup features Manon Tounalom, Liz Kim, Emily Knouff, Morgan Lewis, Hadley Moritz and Dylann Armstrong.
Kim and Tounalom both went unbeaten at last year's Sunshine Invitational, as the Cardinals edged Xavier for the championship in a modified, five-team match play format.
This year's Cardinals played a total of six events in the fall season. Their best finish came at home in the Cardinal Classic, where they tied for second place.
Five of the eight golfers on the Ball State roster are freshmen, and three of those are competing this week. The Cardinals hope the experience gained and lessons learned in the fall will help the young team this spring.
