Samz Scores Career High 26 Points In Loss To CMU
February 27, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Senior guard Jasmin Samz scored a career high 26 points off of 83 percent shooting (5-of-6) from behind the arc in the Cardinals 81-64 loss Wednesday night in Worthen Arena to Mid-American West Division leader Central Michigan.
Although the Cardinals trailed 12-6 early, Ball State (7-20, 2-13 MAC) quickly fought its way back against the MAC West Division heavyweight, outscoring the Chippewas (21-6, 12-3 MAC) 15-7 the remainder of the first quarter. Samz capped the run with a 3-pointer to give Ball State a 21-19 advantage over CMU heading into second frame.
After that, the Chippewas' offense began to click. CMU outscored Ball State 26-9 while shooting 47 percent from the field in the second quarter. The Chippewas' defense also played a big part in their success, holding Ball State to 27 percent shooting from the field compared to its 53 percent in the first frame.
Despite its second quarter woes, Ball State came out in the third period with a sense of urgency. Samz knocked down her fourth 3-pointer of the contest at the 7:13 mark to make a seven-point (49-42) ball game. After the media timeout, CMU still led 53-44 but the Cardinals had turned up their defense, holding the Chippewas scoreless for over a four-minute stretch and quickly making it a 55-51 ball game with 38 seconds on the clock. CMU then answered with five uncontested points to end the third period up 60-51.
Central Michigan over powered Ball State in the final quarter, not because of lack of effort by the Cardinals, they tried to claw their way back down the stretch. The Chippewas would make some key plays, eventually putting the game away in the fourth quarter.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action Saturday when it travels to Western Michigan for a 2 p.m. tip-off in Read Fieldhouse.
