Women’s Tennis Splits Sunday’s Doubleheader
February 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's tennis team (7-2) split its doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals earned a 4-0 win over Western Kentucky but then fell 4-3 to the University of Indianapolis.
The Cardinals opened the day capturing the doubles point over both opponents. The Ball State twosome of Sarah Swiderski and Victoria Sec improved to 7-1 on the season after going 2-0 today. Their 6-2, take down over Western Kentucky's Laura Bernardos and Lisa Friess, earned Ball State the doubles point over WKU. In the Cardinals' evening competition against UIndy, the No. 3 doubles tandem of Isabelle Dohanics and Peyton Gollhofer defeated the Greyhound's Alina Kislitskaya and Anna Valiaeva, 6-2.
Ball State kept its momentum going during singles action against the Hilltoppers. Lilya Hadab gave the Cardinals their second point of the day after defeating Kyla Dilger in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Sec made it a 3-0 match with a straight set win on court five while teammate Dohanics clinched the match on court three, 6-2, 6-0.
After the break, Ball State took on a different opponent when it hosted the University of Indianapolis. The Cardinals had no problems winning the doubles point against the Greyhounds, but singles play was a different story. Ball State dropped first sets on five of the six courts. Gollhofer was the lone Cardinal to win a first frame on court three, she then went on to win her match over Anya Novikova, 6-3, 6-1.
UIndy took points from Ball State on the top two courts, knotting the match 2-2. Rebecca Herrington along with teammates Dohanics and Sec all dropped their first sets to the Greyhounds but won their second frames on their respective courts. Herrington won her three set thriller but Sec did not.
The match would come down to Dohanics who had continuously fought her way back into the match against the Greyhound's Alina Kislitskaya but would unfortunately drop the third set 7-5.
The Ball State women's tennis team will be back in action at home next weekend for two matches when it hosts Southern Illinois Edwardsville (Friday) and Oakland University (Saturday). The match against SIUE will begin Friday at 1:30 p.m. and first serve versus Oakland University is scheduled for 1 p.m.
