Venker & Dominique Lead Softball to 10-0 Win Over Northern Colorado
February 22, 2019 | Softball
SAN JOSE, Calif.- - Ball State softball's pitching staff entered the Silicon Valley Classic I co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara ranked seventh in nation with 78 strikeouts.
Â
In the tournament opener versus Northern Colorado, freshman pitcher Sarah Venker did her part to keep the team near the top of the list, striking out a career-high 10 batters to lead the Cardinals (8-5) to a 10-0 victory Friday morning at the San Jose State Softball Complex.
Â
In fact, Venker did not give up a hit until the top of the seventh inning and limited the Bears (1-9) to just five base runners over her 6.0 innings of work.
Â
Junior reliever Alyssa Rothwell threw the final inning, adding two more strikeouts to the team's total, to help the Cardinals secure their fifth shutout win of the season.Â
Â
Senior starter Aeshia Miles pitched the first five innings and struck out four batters in Friday's 5-0 nightcap loss to tournament co-host San Jose State, giving Ball State 16 strikeouts on the day and 94 on the year.
Â
The Cardinals also started to find their offensive grove in the opener versus Northern Colorado, as junior left fielder Haley Dominique went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Of her three hits, two were triples.
Â
Sophomore second baseman Stacy Payton went a perfect 3-for-3 against the Bears with two RBI, while senior designated player Annie Robinson provided her first home run of the season, a three-run blast to left field.
Â
After a scoreless first four innings, Escondido, California native Hailey Demnianiuk opened the top of the fifth with a single up the middle and came around to score what proved to be the game-winning run on Dominique's first triple of the game. Payton followed with an RBI single through the left side, giving Ball State a 2-0 edge.
Â
The Cardinals added four more runs in the top of the sixth, starting with Robinson's three-run blast to left. Freshman right fielder Trinity Eckerty was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and her pinch runner freshman Kim Manual advanced to second on a bunt single from sophomore center fielder Kennedy Wynn.
Â
Ball State's final run of the inning came from the team's "HD" duo yet again, as Demnianiuk reached base on an error, advanced two bases on wild pitches and scored on an RBI single from Dominique.
Â
The seventh inning saw the Cardinals score four more runs, giving the game it's final margin of 10-0. The Bears could have escaped the inning with little damage, but sophomore pinch hitter Kendall Fields was able to take advantage of a wild pitch on a strikeout that would have been the second out of the frame to reach first base.
Â
Freshman Amaia Daniel followed with a walk in her first collegiate plate appearance to give Ball State a pair of base runners with one out. Following what should have been the final out of the inning, junior pinch hitter Gabby Magnifico took advantage of the extra chance with an RBI single to left field, extending Ball State's lead to 7-0.
Â
Dominique followed with her second triple of the game, bringing home two more runs with a shot to right field. Payton closed the scoring with her second RBI single of the contest.
Â
Dominique would also double in the nightcap versus the Spartans (6-5), but the Cardinals could not carry over the offensive momentum from the opening game of the day. Robinson and Wynn also logged hits in the game for Ball State.
Â
Meanwhile, San Jose State score two runs in both the third and fifth innings, while adding another in the sixth to take the game 5-0.
Â
The Cardinals continue play in the Silicon Valley Classic I on Saturday with a Noon (ET) / 9 a.m. (PT) first pitch versus CSU Bakersfield at the San Jose State Softball Complex and a 7:30 p.m. (ET) / 4:30 p.m. (PT) start against Utah State at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium.Â
