Gym Cards Supporting MAC Mental Health Awareness Week
February 14, 2019 | Gymnastics
Ball State at home Sunday at 1 p.m.
In conjunction with the Mid-American Conference's mental health awareness initiative, Ball State gymnastics is helping bring the issue into the forefront at this Sunday's home meet.
The Cardinals will be wearing lime green ribbons (lime green is the color of the awareness cause)Â and there will be supportive programming as well. Other conference teams competing this weekend will also be promoting the cause.
Earlier this week, the MAC held its fourth annual Mental Health Awareness Summit in Cleveland. All schools were represented and head coach Joanna Saleem attended the event last year.Â

It is great to see all the discussions around mental health that have been initiated this week," Saleem said. "It's important to keep the conversations going and to expose our highly-competitive athletes to the idea that it's OK to get help. Often times individuals will hide the fact that they are struggling. The more we can normalize the idea of getting help and the importance of self-care, the more successful they will be on the competition floor and in life."

On the competition floor, Ball State is improving and getting more confident at the right time. After a win over Western Michigan that included a school record on vault on Feb. 3, BSU authored a solid meet at Bowling Green last Friday, beating the home team in scoring. Stefanie Schweikert and Marissa Nychyk both scored 9.825 for first place on vault at BGSU. Four Cardinals performed well on floor and Lauren Volpe was the top performer on balance beam (9.775).
This is the first of three straight Sundays where fans can see the Cardinals at Worthen Arena. After this meet, there's a tri-meet on Sunday, Feb. 24 and the home finale on Sunday, March 3.
