Cards back at home next two Sundays
MUNCIE - Madeline MacDonald and Jordyn Penny were the two top performers and Kaitlyn Menzione turned in an exciting floor performance Sunday in a dual meet vs. Northern Illinois at Worthen Arena.
"We performed really well in three events," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "We were focused on hitting handstands and sticking landings. We did a nice job of doing that and scoring 49 in three events. We went to beam, and obviously had trouble over there. We need to do a better job adjusting so we can compete the way we know how in four events instead of three."
MacDonald and Penny, each competing in three events, scored 9.800 and better in every event to be the top two scorers in the meet. Both Cardinals were 9.875 on bars and MacDonald also charted a 9.850 on vault.Â
"They looked focused and relaxed," Saleem said. "That's a senior and a junior knowing how to come out on the floor and compete."
Menzione's 9.925 floor routine as the second-highest of the day and the highest single performance of the season for Ball State.
"She put her full back into her routine in the first pass so her difficulty was back in there," Saleem said. "And she stuck it. It was a pretty awesome thing."
In an exhibition, Claudia Goyco closed the meet with a thrilling 9.900 mark on floor. Goyco, competing for the first time after various injuries, was enthusiastically greeted by excited teammates after the performance.
"I can't even describe how happy I am and how thankful I am to have gotten the opportunity to go out there and do what I've been training for basically my whole life," Goyco said.
"We're excited to have her back out there," Saleem said.
NIU won the meet team scoring 195.700 - 194.700. Both teams won two events - Ball State better on vault and bars, NIU with the edge on beam and floor.
Fans can catch the Cardinals Sunday, Feb. 24 at home in the season's only tri-meet at Worthen Arena. SEMO and Illinois State visit and the program will be honoring all former gymnastics alumni. Be sure to follow the Cards on Facebook or on Twitter and Instagram at @BALLSTATEGYM.
