Men’s Golf Downs DePaul, Falls to Miami in Semis at EY Match Play

Cardinals will face Eastern Michigan for third, Miami battles Bowling Green for title
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team edged DePaul in Monday's morning round at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play but came up short in the afternoon semifinals against Miami.
The RedHawks, the No. 2 seed and defending champion, narrowly escaped their opening round match on a tiebreaker against Drake. They will square off for the championship Tuesday with Bowling Green, which upset No. 1 seed Eastern Michigan in the other semifinal.
Ball State will face Eastern Michigan in the third-place match for the second straight year on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. The Cardinals won last time.
CJ Jones won both of his matches Monday to lead Ball State. He was a 4&2 winner over DePaul's Charlie Spencer-White in the morning. In the afternoon, he won the final hole for a 1 up victory over Miami's Cam Solomon in a match neither player ever led by more than one.
Jack Cunningham and Yianni Kostouros also earned full points in the DePaul match with 2&1 victories, and Timothy Wiseman's half point put the Cardinals over the top in a 3.5-2.5 victory.
Against Miami, four matches went to the final hole, with the Cardinals needing three and a half points after the RedHawks won the first two matches off. Jones won, but Miami's Charlie Nikitas edged Keegan Bronnenberg in one match and the other two were halved. The RedHawks won 4-2, defeating the Cardinals in the semifinals for the second straight year.
Like Miami, Eastern Michigan survived the opening round by tiebreaker against No. 8 seed Loyola Chicago. The Eagles then fell 4-2 to Bowling Green in the afternoon.
The rest of the consolation matches are also set. Ohio and DePaul will play for fifth place, and Drake will face Loyola for seventh.
The final round begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
