Track & Field Wins Season-Opening Mastodon Opener
December 07, 2019 | Track & Field
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - - The Ball State track & field team turned in a dominating performance Saturday at the Mastodon Opener, winning six events and turning in 25 career-best performances to take first overall in the 10-team event at the Lutheran Health Fieldhouse on the campus of Purdue Fort Wayne.
"I was really impressed by our team effort today," head coach Brian Etelman said. "We filled out every event area with quality performances and were able to walk away with a team win. There were plenty of lifetime bests from individuals, and any time you PR in December, good things are to come. I look forward to how we will continue to develop and put a balanced product out on the track."
The Cardinals started the meet with a bang, as junior Princess Carter won the weight throw with a career-best toss of 17.83m. It was an improvement of 0.37m over her previous career-best mark and keeps her in fourth in Ball State's record book.
Carter was not the only Cardinal to shine in the weight throw, however, as senior Megan Graves turned in a career-best mark of 17.43m to place second and move into fifth on Ball State's all-time list.
Senior Kelsey Walters continued the team's success in the throws, winning the shot put in 14.35m, just off her career-best mark of 14.37m.
Ball State carried that dominance over to the track, starting with runner-up finishes by junior Anasja Troutman in the 60m hurdles (8.85) and redshirt sophomore Michelle Lehmann with a career-best in the 60m (7.68).
The Cardinals followed with back-to-back event wins, as senior Amber Jones took the title in the 300m (39.89) and redshirt sophomore Madison Kiser captured the top podium spot in the 800m (2:19.18). Both efforts were career-best performances.
Two events later, junior Cayla Eckenroth picked up right where she left off at the end of the cross country season, leading all runners to the line in the 3000m with a time of 10:07.61.
The Cardinals closed the meet with Jones, junior Dejah Johnson, Kiser and junior MaQuila Norman winning the 4x400m relay in 3:56.72.
Overall, Ball State won the event title with a score of 166 points. Indiana Tech placed second with 136 points, followed by Huntington (78), Northern Kentucky (56), Purdue Fort Wayne (52), IUPUI (37), Taylor (20), Xavier (17), Grace (11) and Goshen.
The Cardinals will have a little over a month to wait and train before it's next competition, the Gene Edmonds Invitational hosted by Purdue which starts Jan. 10 and concludes the following day.
