November 07, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State soccer's Nicky Potts and Tristin Stuteville were named to the All-MAC First Team while Sam Kambol and Emily Simmons earned second-team honors, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals were recognized at every position on the field with Stuteville at goalkeeper, Simmons as a defender, Potts as a midfielder and Kambol at forward. Simmons and Stuteville were honored for the second consecutive year after both earned second-team recognition for the 2018 season. Kambol was selected to the all-freshman team in 2016, as was Potts in 2017.
"These ladies have been integral for us all season long," said head coach Josh Rife. "To be recognized by other coaches in our conference is quite an honor."
Potts had a breakout year for the Cardinals with a team high 20 points on nine goals and two assists. The England native also put away five game-winning goals which was the most in the conference. Potts scored the first goal of her career in a road win at Omaha when she netted the game-winner in the 45th minute. She also scored a pair of goals in BSU's first conference win against Eastern Michigan, including the game-winner in overtime. Her nine goals are the most at Ball State since Abbie Boswell scored 10 in 2015.
Stuteville completed a record-breaking season in 2019 as she became the winningest goalkeeper in Ball State soccer history with a total of 37 victories. She completed seven shutouts on the year, the most in the MAC. That also gives her the third most all-time at BSU with 19. The sixth-year graduate student made 85 saves for the year, the second-most in the MAC and the fourth-highest total for a single season at Ball State. Her save percentage of .842 was also best in the MAC.
Simmons completed her second straight All-MAC season by leading a defense that surrendered the fewest goals in the league with only 17. Simmons played in all 20 matches for BSU and made 19 starts while playing 1,745 minutes, the second most for the Cardinals. The Canadian also played in all 20 matches last season while registering 1,898 minutes. Simmons notched an assist in Ball State's victory over Loyola Chicago.
Kambol tied for second on the team with 11 points on seven assists and two goals for the year. The senior's season started strong with an assist in the season-opening rout of Eastern Illinois and the game-winning goal in game two against Marquette. Kambol had a key performance against Buffalo this season with a goal and later an assist on the game-winning goal in double overtime. She also assisted on two goals against Kent State in a crucial conference match late in the season. The South Bend native finished her career sixth at Ball State in goals with 14 and sixth in points with 37.
Led by these four, Ball State strung together an impressive season during Rife's first year as head coach. The Cardinals tied a program record with 15 wins and finished second in the league for the second year in a row. The Cardinals were the only MAC team to defeat league champion Bowling Green, and improved upon last season's win total by one game.
