Field Hockey Sweeps MAC Weekly Honors
November 06, 2019 | Field Hockey
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For their play in last Friday's thrilling last-minute victory over Appalachian State, senior Michelle Shampton and freshman Wietske Overdijkink were named the Mid-American Conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the week, repectively.
"What a way to end the regular season and head into our tournament," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "I love this team because every one of them has worked tirelessly and needed no individual praise or recognition for it. They do it because they love each other and this university. The product the team is putting out there against tough opponents is awesome. This didn't happen overnight—it's been daily grinding in the little things—and I'm happy for them because they are seeing the fruit of that labor in some tangible recognition. It only makes us more humble and hungry stepping into this championship week."
Shampton in exciting fashion on senior day, came to the rescue for the Cardinals in overtime. Shampton scored the game-winner and lone goal of the game to push Ball State past Appalachian State, 1-0, last Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex. Shampton led all players with six shots in the game, including five shots on goal. The senior now has five goals for the season and 13 for her career. Shampton leads the squad offensively in points (15) and goals (5).
True freshman goalie Overdijkink continued to be a defensive anchor for the Cardinals, Overjikink registered her third shutout win of the season over Appalachian State Friday with five saves. She currently leads the squad this season with 56 saves. She also continues to move up in the national rankings and leads the conference in save percentage (83 percent) and goals against average (1.46). She is also second in the league in saves per game (6.75).
The Ball State field hockey team will head to Oxford, Ohio for the second-straight season to play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal round Thursday on the campus of Miami University. The Cardinals enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and they will take on No. 5 Longwood.
