Tough Closing Nine Leaves Men’s Golf Chasing at Erin Hills

ERIN, Wis. -- A 2-over-par opening nine holes had the Ball State men's golf team near the lead Sunday, but a 13-over second nine dropped the Cardinals to 12th on a tight leaderboard at the Marquette Intercollegiate.
From top to bottom, the entire field is separated by just 11 strokes after the first round at Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open. UCLA leads the pack after a round of 292 (+4), two shots better than Northwestern.
Joey Ranieri led Ball State with an even-par 72 and is tied for fifth place, four shots off the lead held by Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs.
The tournament continues with the second round Monday. Ball State's first tee time is 9:50 a.m. CT (10:50 ET). Ten teams in this week's field are ranked among the top 115 in the country, including the Cardinals at No. 68.
