Field Hockey’s Jefferson Tabbed MAC Offensive Player of the Week
October 29, 2019 | Field Hockey
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior Sierra Jefferson (Bethlehem, Pa.) of the Ball State field hockey team has earned Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office today.
"There are no words for how proud I am of Sierra," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "I know her teammates share that sentiment because Sierra is the type of player that will do whatever is necessary to make the whole group better. Her effort was crucial in our victory Friday and near-comeback Sunday. That's nothing new for Sierra, though, she has been a workhorse for us all season and it is wonderful to see her receive recognition for that."
Jefferson created countless attacking opportunities for the Cardinals this past weekend against Longwood and Virginia Commonwealth.
In MAC action Friday, Jefferson set up the two scoring corners to help Ball State earn the 2-1 overtime victory against Longwood.
She then closed out last weekend's competition by providing the attacking spark for BSU's almost come-back win at Virginia Commonwealth. On Sunday, Jefferson fought especially hard versus VCU in the final quarter with her sustained attack for Ball State.
This is the first Player of the Week award for Ball State this season. Jefferson has been a strong offensive force for the Cardinals this season, registering three goals, six points and 11 shots, including nine shots on goal.
The Ball State field hockey team wraps up the Mid-American Conference regular season Friday at the Briner Sports Complex against Appalachian State. The game will be broadcasted live at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Cardinals will also pay tribute to the 2019 senior class prior to the contest.
