WBB Loses Hard Fought Battle In MAC Opener At Toledo
January 05, 2019 | Women's Basketball
TOLEDO, Ohio – It is never a dull moment when Ball State and Toledo play each other, the Cardinals fought hard but couldn't overcome the Rockets toughness on their home court in Savage Arena.
The Cardinals (5-8, 0-1 MAC) won the last time they opened Mid-American Conference action at Toledo (9-3, 1-0 MAC) but unfortunately came up short Saturday, falling 65-58.
For the game, sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown led the Cardinals with a 15-point performance, she was also one rebound shy of a double-double after pulling down nine boards. Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass chipped in 12 points while teammate senior guard Jasmin Samz ended the day with 11.
The first quarter proved to be exactly how you would expect it for these two MAC West Division rivals, as both teams put up a good defensive battle in the first 10 minutes of play.
It was a low scoring first quarter between the Cardinals and the Rockets, having only five field goals apiece. Toledo led by just a hair at the end of the first quarter (14-13). Ball State trailed by as many as six but headed into the second frame of play coming off of a 7-2 run which was capped off by a 3-pointer from freshman guard Abi Haynes.
Toledo started the second frame with a 7-0 scoring spree to take an eight-point lead (21-13) with 7:29 left remaining in the half. Ball State put itself back to within five on two separate occasions with back-to-back baskets from Howard-Bass. But the Rockets continued to capitalize on the Cardinals turnovers, scoring 17 points off of Ball State's 12 miscues to take a 33-24 lead at intermission.
Howard-Bass, Samz and freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustdottir came out with the hot hands for the Cardinals, scoring a combined nine points in the opening minutes of the third quarter, tying the game, 33-33.
After that, the game was close but Toledo never lost its lead, as the Rockets outscored the Cardinals, 19-9, to take a 10-point advantage (52-42) entering the final 10 minutes of play.
Despite some late game scoring in the fourth quarter, Toledo's late run in the third frame proved to be too much for Ball State to overcome the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team will return to Worthen Arena in MAC action, Wednesday for an 11 a.m. matchup against Bowling Green. The game against the Falcons marks the third annual Field Trip Day. Head Coach Brady Sallee hosts the event to provide an opportunity for local elementary schools to enjoy Ball State women's basketball game-day experience.
