WBB Outlasts Kent State In Tonight's Defensive MAC Battle
January 23, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE , Ind. - For the second-straight game, Ball State (7-11, 2-4 MAC) took its opponent down to the wire but this time came out on top. As sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown scored 10 points in matter of 2:42 helping the Cardinals to a 48-44 win over Kent State (10-7, 3-3 MAC) Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
"I credit both teams for putting the gloves on and fighting through it," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "As ugly as it was on offense at times it was a whale of a basketball game. I knew Kent State was going to compete and they did, it was a tough physical basketball game. I am glad we were home and glad we showed the toughness to win that one."
Brown gave Ball State the 44-41 advantage with 1:50 left after attacking the basket and drawing fouls from Kent State. A clutch rebound from senior guard Nakeya Penny and a steal, along with two free throws from senior guard Jasmin Samz, increased the Cardinals lead to five with 47 seconds left on the clock. After that, Ball State remained in control to seal the victory.
Both teams struggled to get things going offensively in the first quarter. Ball State would end up on top taking a 9-8 lead over Kent State heading into the second frame of play.
Unfortunately, the second period mimicked the first 10 minutes of action, as the game became a defensive battle between the Cardinals and the Golden Flashes. It was a 14-13 ball game with just over four minutes left until the break. Samz finally ended Ball State's three-minute scoring drought with a jumper, sparking a 6-0 run for the Cardinals. Kent State quickly answered back with a 6-0 run of its own to take a 20-19 lead over Ball State at intermission.
The Cardinals started the third frame with a 13-4 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir to put themselves up by eight (32-24). Ball State's defense held Kent State to only 18 percent shooting from the field in the third frame. The Golden Flashes would score late, but Ball State was able take a slim, 32-29, lead heading into the final frame.
Brown led all players with a 14-point, 15- rebound performance for her 13th double-double of her career. Samz finished the game with 13 points while teammate Dis Agustsdottir scored 11.
The Ball State women's basketball team will remain at home in Mid-American Conference action Saturday when the Cardinals host Western Michigan at 1 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
