Brown's Double-Double Not Enough In Loss At Miami
January 19, 2019 | Women's Basketball
OXFORD, Ohio – It was a close contest for the two longtime rival programs, as the Cardinals (6-11, 1-4 MAC) had entered today's contest winning the last seven meetings against the RedHawks (12-4, 3-2 MAC).
Today's game consisted of 16 lead changes and four ties. It looked as if the Cardinals were going to hold onto their 55-53 lead with three minutes remaining after senior guard Jasmin Samz knocked one down from behind the arc. But the RedHawks' Leah Purvis answered on the opposite end of the court to give Miami control of the game for good. The RedHawks made their free throws down the stretch for the 60-57 victory over the Cardinals.
Miami opened the game with a 10-4 run in the first three minutes of play. Despite the shaky start, sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown and senior guard Nakeya Penny combined for seven points to cut the RedHawks lead to 12-11. Miami still led by five at the end of the first frame.
The second quarter was a different story, as Ball State eventually took its first lead of the ball game after a Samz three at the 5:35 mark. Both teams traded baskets after that, but back-to-back buckets from Brown down the stretch allowed Ball State to take a 29-26 advantage over Miami at the break. The Cardinals also outscored the Redhawks, 16-8 in the second quarter.
Brown kept the Cardinals in the game today, scoring 12 points in the first and second halves for a 24-point performance. Brown also added 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of her career.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home for its next three Mid-American Conference games when it hosts Kent State (Jan. 23) at 7 p.m., Western Michigan (Jan. 26) at 1 p.m. and Buffalo (Jan. 30) at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
