Cardinals Short on Energy, Shooting in Loss to Ohio

Tayler Persons leads Ball State with 16 points
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball team fell behind from the start Saturday and could never recover in a 70-52 loss to Ohio at Worthen Arena.
Ball State struggled to a 35 percent shooting performance and made just 6-of-22 shots in the first half. The Cardinals trailed 10-0 in the early minutes and eventually faced a 39-18 deficit at halftime.
Tayler Persons led three double-figure scorers for Ball State (10-6, 1-2 MAC) with 16 points, while Zach Gunn and K.J. Walton added 10 each.
"I commend Ohio; I thought they really came ready to play," Ball State head coach James Whitford said. "The problems for us were two-fold. We didn't come ready to play; we lacked the energy we needed from the start. And we had a tough night shooting the basketball."
Ohio (9-6, 1-2 MAC) didn't have a great shooting night, but the Bobcats registered 19 points off 19 Ball State turnovers and outscored the Cardinals 14-2 on second-chance opportunities.
Teyvion Kirk led Ohio with 19 points, while Jason Carter (13) and Doug Taylor (11) also scored in double figures.
Ball State tried to rally midway through the second half with a 7-0 spurt. Persons' 3-point play cut the lead to 50-36, but Ohio's James Gollon hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to stave off a bigger rally.
The Cardinals will head out on the road for two games next week, traveling to play Tuesday at Bowling Green and Saturday at Central Michigan.
