Ball State Plays to 1-1 Draw at Ohio
September 30, 2018 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – True freshman Tatiana Mason scored her team-leading fourth goal on an assist from fellow freshman Jenna Dombrowski, but the Ball State University soccer team conceded a late goal in regulation and could not score in overtime as it tied Ohio, 1-1, at Chessa Field on Sunday afternoon.
Ball State's record moved to 5-3-2 and 1-2-1 in conference play while Ohio moved to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the MAC.
"Obviously we were disappointed to give up a goal there at the end, but anytime you can get points on the road it's a good thing," said head coach Craig Roberts. "We identified five areas where we need to improve, and we did well in about three of them. We'll look to keep at it and put together a complete game next week."
Shots were fairly even on the match as BSU had 13 while Ohio had 15. The Cardinals put eight shots on goal to the Bobcats' seven. Ball State won seven corner kicks to six for Ohio, and Tristin Stuteville made six saves.
The Cardinals got on the board first when Dombrowski fed the ball to Mason in the 31st minute for the opening goal. Ball State continued to apply pressure but was unable to extend its lead.
Ohio created consistent chances throughout the match and finally broke through in the 85th minute when Sydney Leckie beat Stuteville high to score the equalizer. The Cardinals tried to win the match in regulation but could not do so as the clock hit zero and overtime began.
Both sides created scoring chances in the two overtime periods, but neither was able to find the back of the net as the game ended in a draw.
Ball State will be on the road again in its next match at Northern Illinois on Thursday, October 4. Kick is set for 2:00 p.m. The Cardinals will then return home for a Sunday afternoon contest with Western Michigan.
