Aug. 9Â -Â Scrimmage No. 1
The Ball State football team held its first scrimmage of preseason camp Thursday night, and the defense made an early statement under the lights at Scheumann Stadium.
Â
In 12 possessions of work, the defense forced six punts, racked up six sacks and created three turnovers. One of those takeaways, an interception from redshirt freshman Shahid Reece, went 60 yards for a touchdown.
Â
Fellow linebacker Jaylin Thomas registered a sack and later forced a fumble with a big hit, while redshirt freshman safety Myles Hannah added a late interception. Sacks from Christian Albright and transfer Ray Wilborn further highlighted an impressive performance from the linebacking corps.
Â
On the offensive side of the ball, the bulk of the carries went to sophomore Markice Hurt Jr. and freshman Will Jones. Jones, from Lapel High School just down the road, pounded in the first touchdown of the day on the opening drive. Hurt flashed his quickness on several impressive runs, including one for 40 yards down the sideline.
Â
Tight end Keidren Davis made the biggest plays in the passing game. He broke tackles to score a touchdown on a pass from Drew Plitt late in the scrimmage, and it was his run after catch on the first drive that set up Jones' score.
Â
Senior kicker Morgan Hagee accounted for the other points of the night with a 51-yard field goal after quarterback Riley Neal directed the first-team offense into scoring position on its opening drive of the scrimmage.
Â
Aug. 7 - Paint the Town Red
Tuesday was the first day off for the football team since reporting to camp on Aug. 1. The team spread out all around Muncie to hand out posters for its annual Paint the Town Red event.

Aug. 6 - Coordinator Competition
Every day towards the end of practice, the team takes a break for a couple of minutes to watch a few players partake in a friendly competition. On Monday, it was the battle of the coordinators in a game of field goal kicking. Offensive coordinator Joey Lynch was a perfect 3-for-3 while defensive coordinator David Elson missed his final attempt, giving the offense the victory. The reward? The offensive players get to watch the defensive player do a handful of up-downs.
This ain't for the faint of heart. @BallStateFB 2018. #ItsTime.

Aug. 5 - First Day in Full Pads
The Cardinals put on the full pads for the first time Sunday afternoon which made the team sessions a little more intense. RB Malik Dunner had a big run up the middle for a touchdown during the second team segment. QB Drew Plitt connected with WR Hassan Littles in the back corner of the end zone for a pretty 30-yard touchdown pass. On the defensive side of the ball, newcomer CB DT Stephens earned some cheers after notching an interception in the end zone during a red zone 7-on-7 drill.
