Cardinals Race Past College of Charleston, 3-0
August 31, 2018 | Soccer
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC. – After a scoreless first half, the Ball State University soccer team got a trio of goals from Tatiana Mason, Peighton Cook and Sam Kambol in just an 18-minute span to take down College of Charleston, 3-0, at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
Ball State improved to 3-1-0 for the year while Charleston dropped to 2-3-0.
The Cougars outshot BSU 18-13 overall on the night, but the Cardinals put six shots on goal to Charleston's five. Tristin Stuteville recorded five saves on the way to claiming a second-consecutive shutout and Ball State earned three corners on the night.
"I'm very pleased with our performance tonight," said head coach Craig Roberts. "The first half started a little slow as we adjusted to the conditions, but we made some adjustments at halftime and it really paid off. The girls had a strong desire to improve and they did so with a solid group effort."
The Cardinals had to fight off the Cougar attack early as Charleston came out firing. College of Charleston got several shots off in the first half, but Stuteville was solid in goal as she recorded four saves in the first half alone. BSU managed to put only two shots on goal through the opening segment but kept the score even going into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, Ball State quickly flipped the script as the aggressor and it paid off. Lauren Roll sent a cross into the box in the 51st minute and Mason headed it in for her second goal of the year to put BSU up 1-0. Twelve minutes later in the 63rd, the Cardinals again used a header to beat the keeper, this time Cook connected on the assist from Kambol.
Not satisfied with the two-goal lead, BSU continued to attack and earned a foul in the penalty area. Kambol stepped up for the Cardinals and beat the keeper as she buried the penalty kick to add an insurance goal to make it 3-0 in the 69th minute.
Ball State shifted its focus to defense for the remainder of the match and earned its second-straight shutout victory. Freshman goalkeeper Alex DeRuvo checked in for Stuteville in the 81st minute and completed the clean sheet.
"We really concentrated on finishing shots this week and it paid off," Roberts said. "The girls had a strong conviction in that area of their game and it showed. Our back line put in a really solid performance as well. They made it easier on Tristin (Stuteville) in the sense that the shots she did have to save really weren't too difficult for her."
Ball State will stay put in Charleston as they take on Charleston Southern on Sunday (Sept. 2).
