MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2017-18.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at Regan Lewis' effort at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Regan Lewis Competes at NCAA Outdoor Championship
For the first time since the 2008 season, Ball State was represented at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships when junior Regan Lewis competed for a national title in the high jump on June 9 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Battling cold, rainy and windy conditions, Lewis become just the sixth student-athlete in program history to earn NCAA Outdoor Track & Field All-America honors when she was one of 11 high jumpers to clear 1.78m. The effort allowed her to tie for 10th overall and earn Second Team All-America accolades.
The three-time defending Mid-American Conference high jump champion, Lewis started off strong by clearing 1.73m on her second attempt. She was one of only 17 competitors to successfully clear the opening height, while two others passed on the mark.
After missing her first two attempts at 1.78m, Lewis put herself in contention for the national title by clearing the bar on her third. Unfortunately, despite three solid attempts, Lewis could not clear 1.82m under the extremely adverse weather conditions.
Overall, only three competitors were able to clear 1.82m, with UT-Arlington's Alexus Henry doing so on her second attempt to claim the title of NCAA Outdoor High Jump National Champion.
With her 10th-place finish, Lewis became the first Ball State track & field student-athlete to earn NCAA Outdoor Track & Field All-America honors since Amber Williams placed 10th in the 100m hurdles in 2007.
Lewis is also just the second Ball State track & field student-athlete to earn NCAA Outdoor Track & Field All-America honors in the high jump, joining two-time honoree Bonita Harrington (1984 & 1983).
