Two More Ball State Football Players Highlighted on Preseason Watch Lists
July 20, 2018 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Junior Andrew Poenitsch and sophomore Nolan Givan were the latest Ball State football players to see their names pop up on national preseason award watch lists Friday. Poenitsch's name was included on the Rimington Trophy Watch List while Givan's name was featured on the John Mackey Award Watch List.
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football. Since its inception, the 17-year old award has raised more than $3.6 million for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Poenitsch, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, spent the first eight weeks of the 2017 season as the Ball State starting center. He missed the final four games with an injury but is expected to be a key contributor on the offensive line again in 2018.
The John Mackey Award has been presented to the nation's most outstanding collegiate tight end since 2000. The award is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey, who is widely considered to be the best to have played the tight end position and went on to serve as the first president of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). Givan was one of four Mid-American Conference players highlighted on the initial Mackey Award Watch List. Hailing from Berkley, Michigan, Givan led the Cardinals with four touchdown receptions while ranking third in both receptions (25) and receiving yards (159) last fall. He scored a touchdown on his first collegiate reception, an eight-yard catch in the first quarter in the 2017 season opener at Illinois.
Poenitsch and Givan join junior James Gilbert and sophomore Justin Hall on preseason watch lists. Gilbert was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List (college football's top player) for the second straight season. Hall was one of the nation's top freshman wide receivers last year and earned a spot on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List (top receiver).
All of the major college football awards will be presented live on Dec. 6, on The Home Depot College Football Awards presented by Gildan to be broadcast on ESPN at 7 p.m.
