Watts, VanDeventer honored for third straight year, Wiseman for second
MUNCIE, Ind. -- A trio Ball State men's golfers was named to the 2018 Academic All-MAC Team for their performance on the course and in the classroom. Seniors Johnny Watts and Michael VanDeventer earned spots on the list, along with junior Timothy Wiseman.
Watts and VanDeventer, both of whom graduated this spring, were named to the team for the third straight year, while Wiseman earned the recognition for the second year in a row. All three players finished in the top 10 at this year's MAC Championships to help the Cardinals to a second straight runner-up team finish.
Watts, who graduated with a 3.466 GPA in finance, led Ball State this year with a 73.71 scoring average. The Fishers, Indiana, native and 2015 individual MAC champion ended his career fourth in school history for career stroke average (74.16).
VanDeventer, who graduated with a 3.504 GPA in exercise science, was second on the team with a 74.25 stroke average. He won the Pinehurst Intercollegiate for the second victory of his collegiate career.
Wiseman, who just this week qualified for the U.S. Open, owns a 3.708 GPA in finance. He finished the year with a 74.71 stroke average. The first BSU golfer to compete in a major championship while still in school, Wiseman will play in the U.S. Open next week at Shinnecock Hills in New York. He will tee off in Thursday's first round at 2:42 p.m.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.
