Evan Marquardt Selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB Draft
June 06, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team was represented in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday afternoon when the Cincinnati Reds selected junior Evan Marquardt.
Marquardt, hailing from Midland, Michigan, heard his named called in the 20th round by the Reds. The right-handed pitcher has plenty of tools scouts look for in a pitching prospect – height (6-6), plus fastball (low 90s) and sweeping curveball. He earned MAC Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this year after equaling career highs in innings pitched (7.0) and strikeouts (9) in a 9-1 victory over Toledo on May 13.
In his three years on the Ball State squad, Marquardt tallied seven wins, three saves and 134 strikeouts in 119.1 innings pitched.
This is the third consecutive year a Ball State player has been picked in the MLB Draft. Nine Cardinals have heard their name called in the draft the last five years.
Ball State wrapped up the 2018 season with a 32-26 record and finished tied for second in the MAC standings with a 17-10 ledger.
