June 13, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State baseball player Jeff Riedel was one of four Mid-American Conference players selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Region team Wednesday afternoon. This is the fifth consecutive year a Ball State player has been recognized on the all-region team.
Riedel, a MAC Player of the Year candidate this spring, led the Cardinals in several offensive categories in 2018 – batting average (.332), runs (50), hits (75), triples (6), RBIs (48), slugging percentage (.522) and stolen bases (15). The native of Cookeville, Tennessee, hit safely in 42 of 54 games played which included a team season-high 15-game hitting streak in late April and early May.
Riedel tied an NCAA record with five doubles in the win over Western Carolina on March 9. His six triples were the most in the MAC. Riedel also ranked among the top five league leaders in hits (third), runs scored (third) and total bases (fifth).
The right fielder tallied four outfield assists in his final season with the Cardinals, including two assists in the victory over Northern Illinois on April 29. Riedel's second assist against NIU came in the top of the ninth inning when he threw the potential go-ahead runner out at home plate.
Toledo outfielder Ross Adolph and Kent State pitcher Joey Murray were selected to the ABCA Mideast All-Region first team while Toledo pitcher Sam Shutes joined Riedel on the second team. For the complete all-region selections, click here.
Ball State wrapped up the 2018 season with a 32-26 record and finished tied for second in the MAC standings with a 17-10 ledger.
