Ball State Falls to Miami on Day Two of MAC Tournament

AVON, Ohio – Miami scored seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to an 8-1 win over he Ball State baseball team in the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament Thursday evening at Sprenger Stadium.
No. 2 Miami (34-18) stays alive in the winner's bracket and will take on No. 1 seed Kent State Friday evening. Meanwhile, Ball State (32-25) falls into the loser's bracket. The No. 3 seeded Cardinals will take on the winner of Central Michigan and Toledo in an elimination game Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The RedHawks jumped on top of Ball State quickly in the bottom of the first inning. The first four batters reached base and two would come around to score. Miami went on to score twice more in the second and three times in the third to blow open the game. Ball State pitchers issued eight walks in the first three innings, aiding in the Miami outburst.
Meanwhile, Miami starting pitcher Shane Smith kept the Cardinals off-balance all game. In eight innings, the righty scattered seven hits, struck out a career-high 10 batters and did not allow a run.
Ball State's lone run came in the ninth inning thanks to Colin Brockhouse's team-leading 11th home run. Brockhouse also had a double to tally multiple hits for the fifth time in the last six games. Another bright spot was the performance from long reliever TJ Harmon. The junior held Miami to just one hit over its last three at-bats.
Miami is 4-1 against Ball State this season and upped its record to 7-2 all-time against the Cardinals in the MAC Tournament.
