Baseball’s Season Ends in 7-2 Loss to Central Michigan
May 25, 2018 | Baseball
AVON, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team saw its run in the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament come to an end Friday afternoon. Central Michigan knocked off the Cardinals in an elimination game, 7-2.
For the second consecutive game, Ball State (32-26) ran into a starting pitcher who kept the Cardinals off balance at the plate. Central Michigan's (29-29-1) Cameron Brown tossed a complete game gem as the righty scattered six hits, struck out four batters, did not issue a walk and held Ball State to one earned run.
The Chippewas never trailed in their second elimination game of the day. Earlier in the morning, Central Michigan, the No. 4 seed, outlasted No. 5 Toledo by a score of 6-5 to earn the right to face the No. 3 seeded Cardinals.
Jason Sullivan put CMU ahead in the top of the first inning with a two-out RBI double down the right field line.
After the two teams exchanged runs in the fifth, Central Michigan added an unearned run in the sixth and then three more runs in the seventh. Three of CMU's seven runs scored were unearned as the Cardinals committed three errors.
Ball State's two runs came via a Justin Kirkpatrick RBI single in the fifth inning and Noah Powell's run-scoring triple in the seventh.
Five seniors played their final game for Ball State – outfielder Colin Brockhouse, second baseman Seth Freed, Kirkpatrick, outfielder Jeff Riedel and pitcher Trevor Simon.
Central Michigan stays alive and will face the loser of Kent State-Miami in Saturday's first game at 12:30 p.m.
