Toledo Ends Ball State’s MAC Winning Streak
May 12, 2018 | Baseball
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo snapped the Ball State baseball team's Mid-American Conference winning streak at nine games in a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Scott Park.
Ball State (27-23, 14-9 MAC) pitchers struggled with control all day and issued 12 walks, the team's second highest total of the season.
Toledo (18-29, 11-12) capitalized on four walks in the second inning to take the lead for good. Matt Hansen drew a two-out, full-count bases loaded walk to get the Rockets on the scoreboard. The next hitter, John Servello, singled sharply to left center field to put Toledo ahead, 3-2.
The Rockets scored two more runs in the sixth, highlighted by an AJ Montoya leadoff home run, to extend their lead to 5-2.
Toledo starting pitcher Sam Shutes (9-2) gave up two runs in the first inning, but then settled in to hold the Cardinals off the scoreboard the ensuing six innings.
Ball State finally put together a rally in the ninth inning and nearly tied the game. Down to the final out, senior Jeff Riedel came through with a two-run single to slash the deficit to one run, 5-4. Toledo reliever Nate Haugh rebounded to strike out the following batter, junior Griffin Hulecki, to end the game and strand runners on first and second base.
Riedel led the Ball State offense by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Fellow senior Seth Freed gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a two-run double.
Ball State starting pitcher Drey Jameson (6-1) suffered his first collegiate loss as the righty only lasted 4.2 innings. He issued eight walks. In his previous four starts, Jameson allowed a total of five walks.
Saturday's starting time was delayed almost 2.5 hours due to rainy conditions.
The Cardinals can clinch a spot in the MAC Tournament with a win over Toledo in the rubber game tomorrow, May 13. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
