Walters Scores in Shot Put to Lead Track & Field Friday at MACs
May 11, 2018 | Track & Field
BUFFALO, N.Y.- - It was a podium finish for sophomore thrower Kelsey Walters who scored the first points for the Ball State track & field team at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Buffalo.
Â
With her mark of 14.22m in the shot put, Walters earned two points for the Cardinals while scoring at the MAC Championships for the first time in her young career.
Â
Walters was not the only Ball State student-athlete to lock up points, however, as a pair of Cardinals advanced to the finals in both the 100m hurdles and the 100m dash.
Â
In the 100m hurdles, junior Jazmin Smith tuned in the fifth-fastest time of the day with a career-fast effort of 13.89. Redshirt freshman Jasmine Harris was not far behind, earning the seventh-best time in the event at 14.02, which was also a career-best performance.
Â
In the 100m, defending event champion junior Peyton Stewart advanced with the sixth-fastest time of the day at 11.81. Sophomore Bryeana Byrdsong locked up her spot in the event finals by placing second in the third and final preliminary heat with a time of 11.84.
Â
The Ball State track & field team closes out competition in the MAC Outdoor Championships Saturday with competitors in eight event finals. First up will be the high jump and discus starting at 11 a.m.
