Cardinals lead by four over Kent State with two rounds left in Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team surged to the top of the leaderboard Friday afternoon with the low round of the day in chilly, windy conditions at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Led by two under-par rounds from individual leader Michael VanDeventer, Ball State holds the top spot with a team total of 595 (+19) at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.
The Cardinals' 293 in the second of Friday's two rounds was the lowest of the round by 13 strokes. Ball State was fourth after the opening round but charged up to finish the day four shots clear of defending champion and 29th-ranked Kent State at the top. Miami is 11 strokes back in third.
VanDeventer is the only player in the 45-man field in red figures and leads by seven over a trio of players, including 2016 MAC champion George Baylis of Akron. He made nine birdies on the day and never made worse than a bogey on his way to rounds of 70 and 71 to end the day at 3 under par.
VanDeventer is one of four Ball State players in the top 15. Fellow senior and 2015 MAC individual champion Johnny Watts (+6) and junior Timothy Wiseman (+6) are tied for seventh at 6 over par. Senior Michael Makris is four shots behind them in a tie for 15th.
