Men’s Golf Hosts MAC Championships This Week at Sycamore Hills
April 24, 2018 | Men's Golf
League tournament comes to Fort Wayne for first time in its history
The Ball State men's golf team will host the Mid-American Conference Championships this week at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne. It is the first time the event will be held in Fort Wayne and just the sixth time it has come to the state of Indiana.
The nine MAC teams will play 36 holes Friday and 18 holes both Saturday and Sunday to determine the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Regionals. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Ball State finished runner-up last year to Kent State at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, and will take four of the same golfers to this year's event -- seniors Johnny Watts, Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris, and junior Timothy Wiseman. Between the four of them, they have a combined 10 starts at the MAC Championships.
Freshman Jack Cunningham joins that quartet, making his MAC Championships debut. Cunningham has played in every event for the Cardinals in his rookie campaign.
Watts, the 2015 individual league champion as a freshman, finished third a year ago. He again paces the Cardinals this season with a 73.63 stroke average.
The senior from Fishers, Indiana, is one of three past champions in the field at Sycamore Hills this week, joining Akron's George Baylis (2016) and Kent State's Gisli Sveinbergsson (2017).
Last year's individual runner-up, Patrick Flavin of Miami, also returns this year. The senior has won four times in 10 stroke play starts this season.
Kent State, ranked 25th in the country, again enters as the tournament favorite. The Golden Flashes have won eight of the past nine championships and are led this year by Ian Holt, the nation's 25th-ranked player.
Ball State is seeking to put things together this week after what has been an up-and-down season against some stiff competition. The year has been highlighted by runner-up finishes at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate and the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, where VanDeventer was the individual medalist.
BSU enters the MAC Championships looking to bounce back from a 14th-place finish at last week's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
The action begins with a split tee start Friday at 8:30 a.m. The Cardinals' tee times are slated to begin at 9:12 a.m. off the first tee. BSU is paired with Kent State for the opening day.
