Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Central Michigan to 7-4 Win
April 01, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Central Michigan used a huge eighth inning rally to take the rubber game over the Ball State baseball team Sunday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex, 7-4.
The Chippewas (9-18-1, 4-2 MAC) trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the eighth and then erupted for seven runs to pull off the comeback victory. Central Michigan only produced four hits in the inning, but capitalized on two Ball State (14-13, 3-3) errors and a pair of walks. Zach Gilles gave CMU the lead on a perfectly executed safety squeeze play. Jacob Crum added a pair of insurance runs with a bases loaded single through the infield.
The loss spoiled an outstanding pitching performance from Ball State freshman Drey Jameson. The righty went 6.0 innings, struck out eight batters and held Central Michigan to just three singles. The Cardinals were a perfect 11-0 when leading after seven innings before Sunday's loss.
Ball State had a chance to blow open the game in the sixth. The Cardinals were already ahead 3-0 and had the bases loaded with nobody out. However, CMU pitcher Tyler Hankins recovered with a ground out, pop out and strike out to escape without giving up a run. Central Michigan reliever Jack Collins earned the win by pitching the final three frames and striking out eight Ball State batters.
Senior Jeff Riedel, junior Griffin Hulecki and junior John Ricotta each had an RBI for the Cardinals.
Ball State is right back in action this Tuesday, April 3, when the Cardinals host No. 11 Indiana. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
