VanDeventer, Men's Golf Hold Round-One Lead at Pinehurst

Defending champion Cardinals lead by one stroke on tight leaderboard
PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Ball State men's golf team holds a one-stroke lead after day one of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, where the Cardinals are the defending champion.

Ball State opened with a round of 297 (+13) on the No. 8 course at Pinehurst Resort. Michael VanDeventer's even-par 71 was a shot better than any player in the field.

The Cardinals also counted a 73 from Johnny Watts, a 75 from Michael Makris and a 78 from Timothy Wiseman in round one. Watts (T7) and Makris (T18) join VanDeventer in the top 20 with 36 holes to play.

Four teams are within three shots of Ball State, starting with Dayton (+14) in second place. Elon (+16), Radford (+16) and Old Dominion (+16) are tied for third. A group of five players is one shot behind VanDeventer on the individual leaderboard.

Ball State also got an impressive performance from Trevar Denney, making his debut for the Cardinals and competing as an individual. Denney is tied for 11th after a round of 74.
