Cardinals set for first stroke play event of the spring
The Ball State men's golf team is the defending champion this week at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, where the Cardinals will tee it up starting Friday on the No. 8 course at the famed Pinehurst Resort.
Â
It is the first stroke play event of the spring season for Ball State and the first competition since the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play nearly a month ago.
Â
Timothy Wiseman, Johnny Watts, Michael Makris and Michael VanDeventer all placed in the top 20 at last year's event, and all four are back this season. They will be joined by Jack Cunningham, who has been impressive in his freshman campaign.
Â
Wiseman finished just one shot back a year ago. The runner-up result was the best of his collegiate career to this point. Watts and Makris tied for seventh.
Â
Trevar Denney, who joined the BSU program this year, also traveled this week and is set to see his first collegiate action competing as an individual.
Â
The Cardinals are the third-highest rated team at Pinehurst behind Eastern Kentucky and Elon. The field also includes Belmont, Dayton, Longwood, Marshall, Morehead State, Old Dominion, Radford, Sienna, Wisconsin-Lutheran and Xavier.
Â
Ball State finished third at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, reaching the semifinals before falling to No. 1 seed Miami. The Cardinals then rebounded for a tight win over Eastern Michigan in the third-place match.
Â
Wiseman and Cunningham both went undefeated for the week, and Wiseman never trailed at any point in his three matches.
Â
The Pinehurst Intercollegiate begins Friday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. The second round will be played Saturday and the final round Sunday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
