Men’s Volleyball Falls to Ohio State in Heartbreaking Fashion

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ball State men's volleyball team looked to upset No. 5 Ohio State in the opening night of the team's conference action, but came up short. The Cardinals fell to the Buckeyes in St. John Arena, 3-2. Ball State is just the third team to force the Buckeyes into five sets this season.
Ball State racked up 51 total kills for a .246 hitting percentage. The Cardinals also added 49 digs, 46 assists, 7.0 team blocks and four service aces.
Leading the Cardinals was Matt Walsh with 15 kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Walsh also led the team in blocks with one solo block and four block assists. Mitch Weiler and Blake Reardon were also in double digit kills. Weiler had 11 and Reardon had 10. Weiler also had one service ace, nine digs and three block assists. Reardon had two service aces along with a team-high 11 digs. Nick LaVanchy also added 10 digs.
The opening set saw 10 tied scores and three lead changes before a Buckeye service error secured the 25-21 Ball State victory. Walsh, Weiler, Reardon and Ben Chinnici knocked down two kills apiece. Anthony Lebryk and Jake Romano were also able to tally one kill each. Romano had seven assists on the Cardinals' 10 kills. Chinnici and Walsh each had one solo block in the set one win.
Ohio State evened the score with a set two victory, 25-13. Ball State was only able to knock down five kills and hit negative in that set. The Buckeyes tallied 13 kills for an impressive .706 hitting percentage.
The Cardinals came back in set three, winning 25-18 even with 13 kills and a .346 hitting percentage from Ohio State. Ball State was able to hit for .438 with eight kills. Reardon, Weiler, Walsh and Szews each knocked down two kills. Reardon also added two service aces and two digs. Weiler and Walsh also had service aces in the set three victory.
The fourth set proved to be a heartbreaking one for Ball State. The set saw eight tied scores, three lead changes and two match-point opportunities for the Cardinals. Ball State was unable to capitalize in the fourth set, losing 27-25 on a Cardinal ball handling error. Walsh had nine of Ball State's 21 kills in set four. Weiler had five kills while Reardon had three.
After forcing a deciding set, the Buckeyes won the match with a set five victory, 15-10. Ball State had seven kills, a .353 hitting percentage, and 10 digs in the final set.
The Cardinals still lead the all-time series against Ohio State, 104-98-1. Ball State and the Buckeyes will meet again later in the season on April 7.
The Ball State men's volleyball team (5-4, 0-1) will continue MIVA action Saturday, Feb. 10 at McKendree. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
