Track & Field Turns in Strong Effort at Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - - Led by wins in the 60m dash and 4x400m relay, the Ball State track and field team turned in a strong effort Saturday at the Akron Invitational.
Junior Peyton Stewart continued her winning ways, taking top billing in the 60m dash for the second time in three meets with a season-best clocking of 7.55. With her time of 7.55, Stewart is currently tied for third on the Mid-American Conference indoor performance list.
Junior Jazmin Smith also turned in a dominating performance, taking second overall and first among collegiate runners in the 60m hurdles with a career-best time of 8.40. It's the second-best individual performance in program history and currently tops the MAC rankings.
Smith was not done there, however, as she combined with Dejah Johnson, Amber Jones and Bryeana Byrdsong to win the 4x400m relay in 3:49.36.
In addition to the strong performances on Saturday, sophomore Maritza Rodriguez opened the meet for the Cardinals with a career-best effort, clocking in at 17:28:12 to lead all collegiate runners and place second overall in the 5000m run. The effort currently ranks seventh in the Mid-American Conference.
Overall, Ball State's student-athletes won two events, tallied eight top five finishes and posted 12 career-best performances.
