
Cardinals Fall in Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic Opener

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Host New Orleans broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 10-1 victory over the Ball State baseball team in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic Friday night. This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Ball State (2-3) starting pitcher John Baker held New Orleans (3-3) to just two hits through the first four innings. However, the Privateers exploded for six runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the fifth. Collin Morrill started the scoring with a bases-clearing double. Two batters later, Cody Ducote hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot, to break open the game.
The Cardinals tallied their lone run on junior William Baker's RBI double in the top of the eighth inning.
UNO left-handed pitcher Bryan Warzek struck out 12 batters and held Ball State to two hits in 7.0 innings of work to earn his first win of 2018.
The rest of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic schedule has been adjusted. Ball State will now play its final two games of the weekend tomorrow. The Cardinals will face Iowa at 4:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. CT) and Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT).
