Track & Field Sends Three to Finals on Opening Day of MAC Championships
February 23, 2018 | Track & Field
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - - Three members of the Ball State track & field team qualified for Saturday finals on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held Friday at Bowling Green's Perry Field House.
Â
The Cardinals started the day strong, with reigning MAC indoor 60m hurdles champion Jazmin Smith qualifying for the event finals as the second seed with a time of 8.41. It's the second-fastest time of her career and .03 faster than her 2017 MAC championship winning time of 8.43.
Â
Junior Peyton Stewart became the second Ball State student-athlete to advance to Saturday finals with a career-fast 60m dash time of 7.50 to earn the second seed in the championship heat. Stewart's time ties as the fifth-fastest individual performance in program history and would have placed second in the finals at last season's MAC Championships.
Â
Sophomore Bryeana Byrdsong qualified for the 200m dash finals for the second-straight season, earning the seventh seed with a time of 24.80. Byrdsong finished fourth at last season's MAC Championships with a finals time of 24.93.
Â
In Friday's individual event finals, senior Adrienne Mayfield placed 13th in the weight throw at 16.45m, while sophomore Maritza Rodriguez placed 15th in the 5000m run with a career-fast time of 17:26.39.
Â
The Ball State track & field team concludes competition in the 2018 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday with competitors in seven event finals, starting with sophomore Kelsey Walters and freshman Jada Caldwell in the shot put at 11 a.m.
