February 13, 2018 | Men's Golf
Wiseman, Cunningham win again to finish the week 3-0-0
RESULTS
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team claimed a 4-2 victory over Eastern Michigan in a tight third-place match Tuesday to wrap up the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play.
Â
Top seed Miami and No. 3 seed Toledo played to a 3-3 tie in the championship match. The RedHawks took home the title on a tiebreaker, having won more holes on the day.
Â
In the Ball State-Eastern Michigan matchup, five of the six individual matches went all the way to the final hole. Johnny Watts' match was the only one to be decided early, as he dispatched Eastern Michigan's Beau Breault 3&2 at the No. 1 position.
Â
Timothy Wiseman and Jack Cunningham earned full points again for the Cardinals to finish off the event with perfect 3-0-0 records. Wiseman was a 2 up winner over Nic Ross, while Cunningham rallied from three down through seven holes for a 1 up win over Zach Sudinsky.
Â
Ball State also picked up half-points from Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris, both of whom halved their matches against the second-seeded Eagles. VanDeventer trailed most of the way before winning his final hole with a birdie to finish all square. Makris made birdie on his next-to-last hole to square his match.
Â
C.J. Jones' match also came down to the final hole, but Eastern Michigan's Tyler Lewis edged him by a shot for the Eagles' only full point of the day.
Â
Wiseman was perfect for the week at the No. 2 position in the lineup. He never trailed in any match and was only all square after one hole the entire event. Cunningham was unblemished at No. 4, while Watts finished 2-1-0 at the top spot.
Â
In other action Tuesday, Ohio defeated Drake the fifth-place match, while DePaul took down Loyola in the seventh-place match.
Â
Ball State will return to action March 9-11 with its first stroke play event of the spring at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
