Men's Golf Splits Day 1, Will Play for Third at EY Match Play

Wiseman, Cunningham produce wins in both rounds Monday

DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team defeated Drake in the morning round and fell to top-seeded Miami in the afternoon semifinals Monday at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play.

Junior Timothy Wiseman and freshman Jack Cunningham won both of their matches for the Cardinals on day one on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.

Ball State will square off with Eastern Michigan in Tuesday's third-place match. The Eagles tied their semifinal match with Toledo but lost out on the tiebreaker. The Rockets will meet Miami in the championship match. All the action begins Tuesday at 8:15 a.m.

Ball State handled Drake in Monday's first match, winning all but one of the six spots in the lineup. Wiseman was a 5&4 winner, while Cunningham won his match 4&3. The Cardinals also picked up wins from Johnny Watts, Michael VanDeventer and CJ Jones in a 5-1 victory.

In the afternoon, Wiseman and Cunningham again won their matches without having to go the distance. But the Cardinals could not find another point in a 4-2 loss. VanDeventer came the closest, going all the way to the final hole before Miami's Brian Ohr pulled out a 1 up victory. Watts fell 3&2 to Patrick Flavin in a matchup of two of the MAC's top golfers.

Drake and Ohio won their consolation matches Monday afternoon and will play in Tuesday's fifth-place match. DePaul and Loyola lost in the consolation bracket and will face each other for seventh place.
