Softball Ends Play in Kickoff Classic with 4-1 Loss to FGCU
February 11, 2018 | Softball
FORT MYERS, Fla. - - Sophomore center fielder Kennedy Wynn blasted her third home run of the season, but it was unfortunately the only hit for the Ball State softball team in a 4-1 loss to FGCU Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals finished play in the FGCU Kickoff Classic with a 3-2 overall record. The host Eagles improved to 4-0 on the year with the win.
Â
FGCU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a two-run blast from Racquel Fournet.
Â
The score remained 2-0 until Wynn led off the top of the fifth with her third home run of the season. In yesterday's 5-1 victory over Georgetown, Wynn led off the fourth with a solo blast and added a two-run shot with two outs in the fifth.
Â
Unfortunately, FGCU added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth of Sunday's contest to give the game its final score of 4-1.
Â
Senior Carolyn Wilmes suffered the pitching loss for Ball State, falling to 2-1 on the year after surrendering four hits and a pair of runs over 3.0 innings of work. She also struck out one batter.
Â
Sophomore Alyssa Rothwell pitched the final three innings for the Cardinals, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned), while also striking out one.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Friday, when it opens play in the Troy Cox Classic, hosted by New Mexico State, with a 1:15 p.m. ET / 11:15 a.m. MT matchup versus defending national champion and top-ranked Oklahoma.
Â
The Cardinals will also play their first of back-to-back games versus Boston University on the opening day of the tournament. First pitch for that game is scheduled to 6:15 p.m. ET / 4:15 p.m. CT.
