Hogg and Wynn Help Lead Softball to Pair of Saturday Wins
February 11, 2018 | Softball
FORT MYERS, Fla. - - Led by strong performances from Janae Hogg and Kennedy Wynn, the Ball State softball team improved to 3-1 on the year with a pair of victories in the FGCU Kickoff Classic Saturday at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Â
In Saturday's midday opener, Hogg smashed a pair of doubles and blasted the Cardinals' first home run of the season to drive in four runs in an 8-2 victory over NC State.
Â
The nightcap saw Wynn smash a pair of home runs and drive in three RBIs to help lift Ball State to a 5-1 win over Georgetown.
Â
The Cardinals were just as dominating in the circle, as the team's three pitchers combined to allow just one earned run on the day.
Â
Sophomore Aeshia Miles picked up the win versus the Wolfpack (2-2), throwing 6.0 innings and allowing seven hits and a pair of unearned runs. She tied her career high with six strikeouts, while not issuing a single walk, to improve to 1-1 on the year.
Â
Senior Carolyn Wilmes followed with five scoreless innings versus the Hoyas (0-4), surrendering just three hits while striking out five. She did not issue a walk as well, on her way to improving to 2-0 on the year.
Â
Sophomore Alyssa Rothwell threw the final inning versus NC State and the final two against Georgetown, allowing a combined six hits over 3.0 innings of work. She yielded one run in the seventh versus the Hoyas, while striking out three batters and not issuing a walk over her two appearances.
Â
Overall, freshman Hailey Demnianiuk led the Ball State offense with four hits in the two games, including her first career double in the fifth inning versus Georgetown.

GAME 1 RECAP: Ball State 8 – NC State 2
Â
The Cardinals carried over their offensive energy from Friday night's 10-2 (5) win over LIU-Brooklyn, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning versus NC State.
Â
Sophomore left fielder Haley Dominique opened the game with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior second baseman Maddy Labrador. Hogg followed with her first RBI hit of the day, a single to center field.
Â
After a double by junior designated player Madison Lee gave the Cardinals a pair of runners in scoring position, Wynn picked up her first RBI of the game on a fielder's choice which successfully advanced both runners. Demnianiuk followed with a RBI single to left, giving Ball State a 3-0 advantage.
Â
While NC State was able to take advantage of a pair of Ball State errors for single runs in both the third and fifth innings, the Cardinals regained control of the game with a five-run sixth inning.
Â
Freshman right fielder Kendall Fields opened the frame with a walk, while freshman pinch runner Katie Janiga advanced to second on a single by Dominique. After Labardor reached base on a fielder's choice, giving the Cardinals runners at the corners, Hogg blasted a three-run shot over the fence in center field.
Â
Things got interesting from there, as a pair of Wolfpack errors helped bring home two more Ball State runs. Lee reached base on the first error, while back-to-back walks to Wynn and Demnianiuk loaded the bases.
Â
Junior transfer Annie Robinson followed with a grounder to first, but after getting the force out at home, an NC State throwing error allowed two more Ball State runs to cross the plate giving the game it's final score of 8-2.
Â
Â
GAME 2 RECAP: Ball State 5 – Georgetown 1
Â
Ball State got off to another fast start in the nightcap, starting with a one-out single by Demnianiuk who then advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. Two batters later, Lee singled down the right field line to drive home Demnianiuk and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Â
The score remained 1-0 until Wynn opened the top of the fourth with a solo home run which nearly took out the FGCU scoreboard.
Â
The Cardinals extended their lead to 5-0 with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. With Demnianiuk on second after doubling, a wild pitch and a walk to Hogg gave the Cardinals runners on the corners.
Â
Lee followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, extending Ball State's lead to 3-0. Wynn then blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left-center field to give the Cardinals a five-run lead.
Â
Georgetown would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth and had a chance to even the score with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Rothwell was able to end the game with a strikeout to secure the Ball State victory.
