Preseason All-American: Baker Earns National Attention
December 19, 2018 | Baseball
John Baker will enter his junior season as one of the top-ranked starting pitchers in college baseball. The right-hander has garnered national attention from Collegiate Baseball, earning third team preseason All-American honors.
Â
Baker, from Hartland, Mich., has 10 career wins and 180 career strikeouts after two seasons. His 118 strikeouts last year ranks third in school history and tied for 22nd in the nation. Head coach Rich Maloney says Baker will be a player to watch after his success not only for BSU but in summer baseball.
Â
"This is an honor recognizing John's success here and in the Cape Cod League this summer," Maloney said. "John has solidified himself as a player to watch this season. John always pitches with a chip on his shoulder and we expect him to be a leader of our pitching staff."
Â
JOHN BAKER'S CAREER STATS
Â
Baker was the only player from the Mid-American Conference and one of just two players from an Indiana school cited by Collegiate Baseball, which named him to its 2017 Freshman All-American team.
Â
Ball State, which has posted six consecutive winning seasons, will begin its 2019 season in February against Stanford in Arizona. The Cardinals will host 23 home games at Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex this year.
