WBB's Fourth Quarter Fight Not Enough In Gulf Coast Showcase Opener
November 23, 2018 | Women's Basketball
ESTERO, Fla. – The Ball State women's basketball team (1-3) fell to Fordham (3-2) by a score of 78-70 despite only trailing by one to the Rams with under a minute remaining, in the opening game of the 2018 Gulf Coast Showcase.
The Cardinals didn't lose due to lack of effort. Ball State had led the entire first half but the Rams shot 50 percent (9-of-18) from the field in the third quarter while defensively holding Ball State to just 20 percent (3-of-15) which ended up to be the deciding factor.
Sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown and true freshman point guard Abi Haynes led Ball State in scoring with 12-points apiece. Brown also recorded her fifth career double-double with 11 rebounds.
Ball State opened the game against Fordham with its best offensive start of the season. The Cardinals surged to a 16-8 lead over the Rams by the first quarter media timeout. Ball State ended the first period shooting 80 percent (8-of-10) from the field to take a 20-13 advantage over Fordham heading into the second frame.
The Rams started to fight back, however, scoring back-to-back baskets to come within four (20-16) at the start of the second quarter. Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass knocked down a 3-pointer that would stop the Rams run. The Cardinals then remained resilient the remainder of the first half, shooting 65 percent from the floor while defensively holding Fordham to only 33 percent. Ball State would take a commanding 41-32 lead over the Rams at intermission.
Fordham began to slowly fight its way back into the ball game in the third quarter of play, outscoring Ball State 17-7 at the 3:08 mark to forge its first lead of the contest, 49-48. The Rams had built a five-point lead (53-48) over the Cardinals to end the third stanza.
By the final frame it had looked as if Fordham had taken away the Cardinals momentum, up until junior guard Nakeya Penny and senior forward Aliyah Walker put together a 6-0 run for Ball State to bring the Cardinals back within two, 58-56, with 7:03 left in the game. After Fordham was forced to call a timeout to regroup, the Rams went back up by nine.
But the Cardinals wouldn't give up, Haynes and Brown scored a combined 11 points to knot the game (67-67) with under a minute remaining. After a couple of free throws, however, Fordham wouldn't relinquish the lead, ultimately pulling away for an eight-point victory.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues play at the Gulf Coast Showcase Saturday at 11 a.m. when it faces Duke for the third time in program history.
