WBB Drops Second Game Of Gulf Coast Showcase To Duke

ESTERO, Fla. – The Ball State women's basketball had the program's best performance against Duke in its third ever meeting Saturday afternoon in the Cardinals second game of the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Cardinals fell to the Blue Devils by a score of 79-62.
With the loss, Ball State drops to 1-4 overall while Duke improves to 3-2 on the year.
For the game, the Cardinals were led in scoring by sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass while defensively, sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown had her second-straight double-digit rebounding performance with 10.
The Duke Blue Devils led 8-2 at the first media timeout with 6:32 to go, after a layup from Leaonna Odom. Ball State, however, continued to play close to Duke and would put together an 11-5 run to knot the game 13-13 with just under two minutes remaining in the first. Howard-Bass scored five points during the four-minute stretch, including the tying basket.
The second period saw the Blue Devils surge to an 18-point advantage with 2:31 to go after Miela Goodchild hit her fifth field goal of the game. Duke shot 51 percent (15-29) from the field to close out the half and take a 44-27 advantage over Ball State at intermission. Defensively on the boards, both teams were equal with 20-apiece. Brown led both teams with seven boards heading into the third frame.
Duke had built its largest lead of the game of 21-points (54-33) by the 6:42 mark of the third quarter. Ball State began to claw its way back into it, though, outscoring Duke 10-2 to make it only a 13-point game with less than two minutes to play in the third stanza. Duke would score two straight buckets to go back up, 61-47, heading into the final frame.
Duke shot 69 percent (9-13) from the field in the fourth to close out the game.
The Ball State women's basketball team will wrap its three-game event at the Gulf Coast Showcase Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cardinals will face the loser of the Quinnipiac versus Missouri contest, which will begin at 1:30 p.m.
