Purdue Pulls Away in Second Half as Cardinals Fall, 84-75
November 10, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Tayler Persons leads Ball State with 19 points, all in the first half
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball team trailed by just one after halftime at No. 24/22 Purdue, but a 19-2 run in the second half fueled the Boilermakers to an 84-75 win Saturday night at Mackey Arena.
Tayler Persons led the way for BSU (1-1) in scoring and rebounding with 19 and eight. Persons' 19 points all came in the first half. K.J. Walton was the only other Cardinal in double digits with 13, while Kyle Mallers, Tahjai Teague and Ishmael El-Amin had eight apiece.
"I thought we showed a lot of grit and found a way to hang in there, but unfortunately that first eight minutes in the second half was the difference tonight," head coach James Whitford said. "I told our team that we lost to a great program today. I've always had a lot of respect for Purdue."
The game got off to a sloppy start as both teams had multiple fouls, turnovers and missed shots through the first four minutes. The Cardinals finally settled in as Persons scored seven straight points to lift his team to a 9-6 lead at the first media timeout. Purdue (2-0) responded by stringing together a 10-1 run through the next stretch of the game to claim its own advantage.
Despite suffering the setback, Ball State outshot Purdue from the field with a 48 percent mark to Purdue's 43 percent clip. The Cardinals also knocked down 11 shots from 3-point range while the Boilermakers made only seven. The Boilermakers claimed a distinct advantage in rebounds with 40 to BSU's 29, as well as in points in the paint with 44 to 22 for Ball State.
The Cardinals now prepare to make the trip to South Carolina where they will compete in the annual Charleston Classic. Ball State will challenge nationally-ranked Virginia Tech on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET. Depending on the results of Thursday's contests, BSU will face either Alabama or Northeastern on Friday.

K.J. Walton and Persons continued attacking the rim for Ball State to end the run, and the teams traded baskets and leads for the remainder of the first half. The Boilermakers gained a little separation through the last few minutes, but El-Amin hit a clutch three and Teague grabbed a steal that led to a breakaway dunk to end the half as the Cardinals went into the locker room trailing, 42-41. BSU ended the half with a 6-of-13 clip from 3-point range.Tayler Persons working his magic! This his his third trey of the first half. Already with 19 points.

Both teams continued to trade makes early in the second half, but the Boilermakers got hot and put together their 19-2 run spanning nearly five minutes that earned them a 17-point lead. Walton finally scored a pair of driving layups along with a bucket under the basket by Teague to break up the run and give the Cardinals life. Austin Nehls then hit back-to-back 3's to trim the deficit back to nine. Unfortunately for BSU, that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.Tahjai Teague says, "I'll take that, thank you" ...
