Despite Personal Bests, Cardinals Fall to Bowling Green
October 26, 2018 | Women's Swimming and Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshmen Abbie McCarter and Katie Walker both recorded career best times, but the Ball State University swimming and diving women fell to Bowling Green by a team score of 206-94 in the first dual meet of the season.
It is the second consecutive runner-up result for the Cardinals. BSU previously finished second at the Indiana Intercollegiate to open the year.
"It was a hard-fought meet tonight. We took a few punches early, but I like how the team responded and kept fighting till the end," said head coach J. Agnew. "Our Seniors continue to show great leadership and our freshmen made a huge impact for the team with Katie Walker winning the 1000 free and Abbie McCarter taking the 100 breaststroke. The team is getting better every day and we are looking forward to Eastern Illinois and Akron next week."
In just the second event of the evening, Walker recorded a personal best in the 1000 yard freestyle when she placed first with a time of 10:35.56 to snag nine points for the Cardinals. McCarter's personal record came later on in the 200 yard breaststroke where she recorded a time of 2:27.10 to finish fourth and claim two points.
McCarter also finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.45 for Ball State's only other first place finish of the night. The Cardinals had several second-place finishes including Audrey Schank in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, Sophie Bader in the 200 yard butterfly and Makenna Bottorff in the 100 yard butterfly, among others.
In the diving portion of the meet, Rachel Bertram recorded an NCAA zone cut on the three meter with a 290.48, good for second place. Bertram also claimed second in the one meter with a 241.05.
As far as relays, BSU started the meet by taking second in the 200 yard medley relay with a team made up of Schank, McCarter, Bottorff and Peighton Gilbert. The Cardinals also claimed fourth and sixth in that event. To close the night, Ball State took third, fourth and sixth in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Next up for the Cardinals is the home opener, which will be a co-ed meet against Eastern Illinois on Friday, Nov. 2. That meet will get underway at 5:00 p.m. ET and the men will sign posters at the conclusion of all the events.
